1️⃣ Standard Form & The Zero Trap
Standard form is writing numbers using standard digits: 0 through 9.
⚠️ The "Eleanor Trap": Digit Place vs. Digit VALUE!
This is the #1 place where students lose points on tests! Know the difference:
In 7,462, the 7 is in the thousands place.
In 7,462, the VALUE of the 7 is 7,000!
Rule: If the test asks for VALUE, write numbers (like 7,000, 70, or 7), NOT words like "thousands"!
2️⃣ Expanded Form
Expanded form writes the number as the SUM of the value of each digit:
Do not write words like "5,000 thousands" inside the math formula!
3️⃣ Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Hundred
Remember the rhyming rule:
"Find your place, look to the right. 4 or less, let it rest! 5 or more, add 1 more!"
4️⃣ Story Problems & Estimation
Clue words like "about how much" or "to the nearest ten dollars" mean you should round first, then solve!
Example: Dustin buys a scooter for $199 and a helmet for $49. About how much did he spend to the nearest ten dollars?
• $199 → $200
• $49 → $50
• $200 + $50 = $250!
