How Long Division Works

Remember the family motto: Does McDonald's Sell Cheese Burgers? or Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother, Rover!

1. DIVIDE (Dad)

Ask: "How many times does the divisor fit into the current number?"

Write this number at the top in the quotient row.
M

2. MULTIPLY (Mom)

Multiply the new quotient digit by the divisor.

Write this product directly underneath the working digits.
S

3. SUBTRACT (Sister)

Subtract the product from the current working number.

This reveals what's left over from your group.
B

4. BRING DOWN (Brother)

Pull down the next digit from the dividend next to the remainder.

This forms your next target number to divide!
R

5. REPEAT or REMAINDER (Rover)

If there are more digits, loop back to Divide! If no digits remain, the leftover is the Remainder (R).

⚠️ Watch Out for The Zero Trap!

When you bring down a digit, if the divisor cannot fit (fits 0 times), you MUST write a 0 in the quotient before bringing down another digit! For example, 618 ÷ 6 = 103, NOT 13!

✅ Check Your Work Formula

(Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder = Dividend

Example: (4 × 18) + 3 = 72 + 3 = 75. It always balances!
